Dextronaut

I feel really bad for people who like Dextronaut. While Genevieve was a serious effort at creating a more wide scope piece of music for dissociated mindsets, Dextronaut was a complete joke recorded with 20 dollar equipment. I think that whole album was made in 3 hours (it would’ve taken a lot less had we been able to stop laughing).

General information

When VC assembled and released Dextronaut, the intention was much less serious than on Genevieve, an alternate list of joke song titles were provided, with SGL and LVG being abbreviations of Sir Grim-a-Lot and Lord Very Grim.

During the Genevieve cycle, these were changed to Sandon Graeme Laurent and Lazare Veronique Garnier, ornate French names chosen to connote a sense of luxury, fitting the already established initialisms.

As such, Dextronaut was originally circulated with this deliberately ridiculous track list, artwork depicting the members of the band as Varg Vikernes and Per Ohlin, and the fake label Grim Productions. This version likely surfaced online around 2002, shortly after it was recorded, although the band fabricated claims that it was recorded in 1998. It’s unlikely that this version made its way beyond a small circle of contacts and connections, but later circulated on file-sharing platforms.

Original tracklist

01Intro (Through Ice Caverns Of Grimness And Frost)
02Chapter II Grim Chariots (Blazing The Trail Of Northern Cold)
03Chapter II Symphonaire Des Grim (Troll Fire Of Bloody Snowhells)
04Chapter III Grimica Und Helvetta (Dark Romantic Slavery)
05Chapter IV Tales Of Grimness (Lord Grim Scarysad)
06Chapter V Night Frost Tragedy (Death Of Grimica)
07Chapter VI Grim Opus (Devil Forest Of Die)
08Chapter VII Grim Icicles Of Misanthropy (Starlit Seas Of Angel Blood)
09Outro (Grimbitten In The Elysian Ice Fields)

There even was a review which seems to suggest a different origin other than Portland, OR.:

Raw primitive black metal from the barren wastelands of Oklahoma! Demo level recording and evil gnome vox. Sorta in the vein of say VONDUR. Tongue-in-cheek and that’s good. Pictures of Grishnack and Dead for the band members. Regret that I really can’t read the song titles cos of the layout. All in good fun you grim church burning fucks!
